When Robotmasters was announced in 2004, it was a fan's dream. There was Starscream, who is arguably in the top three favourite characters in Transformers history; Japanese favourite Star Saber, who I am no stranger to writing for; Beast Wars Megatron, a character who has never appeared in a fan dub, along with Optimus Primal -- both fan favourites, especially to the die-hard fans of Beast Wars; and of course, Optimus freakin' Prime.
Peter and I figured this would never hit North American shores... Some fans needed an alternative to a sub... And because it's only six minutes in length, it would be easily to dub! I then wrote a script, trying to stay true to each major character and we were on our way, announcing auditions. With so few roles up for grabs, Peter and I mutually thought it would be best to take a step back and not keep any roles for ourselves, especially because we weren't being strict on a deadline.
We cast Kenny McCoy (SC: Ultra Magnus) as Optimus Prime, Jeroen Martens (Victory: Wingwaver) as Megatron, Jared J. Lee as Optimus Primal, Daniel Ross (Victory: Icepick) as Starscream -- who had portrayed him previously in the Scramble City FV, we also cast Curt Page (Victory: Thunderwing), Bjorn Rudolfsson (Victory: Killbison), Scott M. (Victory: Gripper) and Benjamin Rossiter. Of course, we had our Star Saber, Brad Venable. We also had one more part left, which was the most important... Victory Leo. We decided to choose Frank Todaro for this role, as he always comes through with great work and is reliable, because we need to use him in Victory! (Send me that cheque stat, Frank.)
One problem we had was with our Optimus Primal voice actor. He seemed to have his own certain way of how to do things in a dub which didn't agree with ours, so he dropped out. We were able to re-cast John Patrick (the supreme overlord of the Headmasters Mega-Dub Project) as Bigbot and we were on our way.
Due to work on Victory, Beast Wars Neo, and many other factors, work progressed slowly but surely. Eventually, we finished it up and now it's been released.
The episode's premise is simple. Megatron has gathered a group of Decepticons to go after Earth's rich new energy source, Solitarium. Optimus Prime and Victory Saber, however, are there to stop him. And... joining the Autobots is Optimus Primal, who blames himself for allowing Megatron to planewalk. Quite simply, it's just an excuse to gather all of the favourite Transformers into one little circle, so enjoy it!
